HOOKIN' BULL WINS THE ELDORADO TOURNAMENT

We had a real international team on last week with Ronnie who hails from Belguim, Dan from Singapore and the Aussie father and son team of Dean and John.  The first day out saw Dean sucessfully fought a striped marlin on stand up 15kg out in the Bay that we estimated around 100kg. The guys were keen to fish the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club Eldorado Tournament run out of the Russell Clubrooms which is a great contest getting better each year.  The fish were very much spread up and down the coast for the tournament. We weighed 2 stripies at Tutukaka on 15kg for Dan and John.  Dan's fish went 95.8kg and was the highest scoring fish for an overseas angler. Johns' fish weighed 93.2kg which gave us a good start in the points standings.  Very quiet day on day 3 for us with the sea conditions not being the greatest.  Last day of the contest saw Ronnie tag a stripey on 37 to give us the final points we needed to win.  Well done guys - an awesome effort and congratulations on winning the trip to Kona to fish the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in August.  Fish are finally here in reasonable numbers and the odd blue marlin being reported.  Looking forward to fishing February and March.  Tight lines JB

 23 September

We had the prize giving at the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club a couple of weeks back - a great night and anglers of Hookin' Bull picked up a fair bit of silverware.  Guy Jacobsen was awarded a number of trophies for his outstanding catches last season.  Our son Brad also featured with several awards including the Sportfishing NZ trophy for the top junior angling prize for his blue marlin of 226kg on 15kg. The Club put on a great night as always - many thanks to the organisers at the Bay of Islands Swordy. I'm in the States at the moment - we had a few quiet days fishing in Kona. It was great to catch up with some old friends there.  Halifax is next and then down to Florida for a few days.  We are back for the semis of the RWC and shortly after that Pacific HQ will be doing her sea trials and getting ready for the season. Pacific HQ is looking really good and it's going to be great to have her finally in the water and good to go.  Hookin' Bull is currently out of the water and having her annual winter tidy up.  Looking forward to the season and taking bookings now - email us to book some dates - remember the tournaments and prime time February and March/April gets booked up well in advance.  Don't delay - secure your time now.  Cheers and tight lines JB

22 June

Swordfishing continues to be a highlight of the winter months with some good action off the Coast during both daylight and darkness. We've had a number of fish on 15kg with some tough battles but still waiting for the right one to capture that world record sword for Guy.  The Bay of Islands Swordfish Club had another great light tackle kingfish tournament with some fantastic fishing.  We have been busy finalising the refit on the mothership - "Pacific HQ" (formerly Marlin HQ).  She is looking great and we're pretty keen for her launch date now set down for late September.  Hookin' Bull had a fantastic season that certainly was high lighted by the number of good Blue Marlin we captured - what a amazing run of those blues it was.  We're taking bookings for the 2012 marlin season now so don't delay, email or phone today to secure your place on Hookin' Bull.

04 April ** HOOKIN' BULL WINS TRUCKERS AND LOGGERS CONTEST** 24/26 March saw over 80 anglers participate in the annual Truckers and Loggers Fishing Contest run out of the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club Paihia rooms.  The weather wasn't the best for the tournament with some pretty crappy conditions over the 3 days.  We had the guys from Maxitrans onboard and day 2 saw us tagging 2 striped marlin as well as 2 mako sharks.  The last day we boated a bronze whaler on 15kg that weighed 119kg.  We took out the team section and Gary Banks won top angler of the contest.  Looking forward to next year's event - it's become a really well run contest and well supported by the trucking and logging industry.

23 Feb  ** PENDING IGFA WORLD RECORD** Eryn Jacobsen landed a striped marlin on 4kg line weighed in yesterday at Houhora Club scales that went 119kg. Eryn has been trying for this fish for a number of years now so this one is way special.  Well done Eryn - we know this one has been a long time coming.  Great week of fishing - not very often you get 2 pending WR's in 3 days. World class fishing continues off North Cape - we still have some space available for charter in April and some good time in May.  Give us a call and book a fishing charter on Hookin' Bull.

21 Feb - ** NEW PENDING IGFA WORLD RECORD ** Eryn Jacobsen weighed a blue marlin of 181.8kg on 6kg line last night in Houhora.  Fantastic fish on light tackle a real tough fight - well done Eryn - top job.  Great fishing around the North Cape area with good numbers of blue marlin and every one seems to be getting their share.

04 Feb - We have Ronnie and Serge from Belguim on board for 5 days and Serge tagged a nice blue marlin around 180kg yesterday.  Good start and here's to hoping we get into a good patch of fish and get some more.  Great settled patch of weather - long may it last.  JB

18 Jan 2011 - Saturday 15 Jan we busted a nice stripey off after around 1 hour fight time on 4kg for Eryn - this 4kg fish is taking it's time......look out when we nail the record. Plenty of mahimahi, spearfish and still some nice blues turning up with temp staying warm.  We got a small Mako on 4kg on the Sunday for Eryn that we released.  Blow came and went pretty quickly here  - we in port for a couple of days of M, R & R and back out soon.  The BOI Swordfish Club Juniors was another great weekend - bit quieter than we thought it was gonna' be but still the kids had some fun and a good mix of prizes across the board.  Well done to Trent Tipene from Russell who got his first marlin - a nice stripey of 103kg and took out the heaviest of the contest.  Holly Mather got the heaviest Kingfish of over 15kg - go Holly.  Good to see the kids out there and at 'em.....and again big thanks to Robbie Aukett and Brian Marsh for their efforts in organising this event - they got over 100 kids on the water this weekend....better than on the streets . cheers JB

05 Jan 2011 - Guy Jacobsen landed a 215.3kg BLUE MARLIN on 8kg line after a tough fight that lasted just under 2 hours.  We got this fish off Whangaroa. This is a pending IGFA WORLD RECORD claim - great fish and a great job Guy.  The season is shaping up to be a cracker with some real nice blues including a 313kg weighed the other day at Whangaroa.  We still have a few days available for charter in Feb and March and a bit in April so give me a bell if you are keen to fish.  Here's a shot of Guy's fish below on the leader. Tight lines - JB.

 3 Jan 2011

We had a great day yesterday delivering the boat up to Houhora. Just the crew of Brad Fergus, myself and Guy Sutherland onboard with my 10 year old son Brad.  We got ambushed by a nice blue off the back of Stephensons.  Brad did a great job on stand up 15 and after a good scrap we had his first marlin in the boat.  A great first fish too of 226.8kg and a pending NZ Junior record for a blue marlin.  Well done Brad - nice work.  Today we got tagged a stripey off Whangaroa and also got a short billed spearfish around 15kg or so.  Nice blue water and plenty warm for those blues.  Great to see.  Drop me a line or call if you have any queries or keen to fish with us.  Looks like it is going to be a great season. Cheers JB

01 October 2010
We are taking bookings for the Hookin Bull for this forthcoming season - give me a bell
if you are keen to fish this season - lets hope it produces some big fish again like last
season. Cheers JB
16 September 2010
Updates have been few and far between I know - fishing has taken a sideways step
with the refit on the mother boat Marlin HQ. Watch this space for some news on what we have been up to on the HQ. cheers JB

05 May

Friday last week saw us weighing in a monster of a striped marlin for Guy - another pending world record fish for Hookin Bull - 174.8kg on 3kg line.  A fantastic fish at any time and on this line weight we were rapt to achieve.  There's been some really good sized stripies around and it's great having them close to the Bay of Islands with a lof of the action off the Knights and Whangamumu areas.  In late March Guy landed a 94.2kg swordfish on 6kg which has been sent off to IGFA as a world record claim.  This sword was caught up at the Middlesex Bank off the Three Kings and too around 30 minutes to land.  With the weather being so settled and the fish on the coast we hope to fish for as long as we can this season.  If you want to have a go at one of this big striped marlin we are seeing right now give me a call as I have charter days available.

 08 March 2010

What an amazing 2 weeks we have had on the Hookin Bull.  Yesterday, Guy Jacobsen dealt to the 2kg striped marlin record up on the Middlesex Bank.  This fish has been a long time coming -   4 years plus at a rough estimate and quite nice to be able to finally get this one after many close calls.  Guy's fish was weighed up at Hohoura - 112.6 on 2kg - a pending world record claim.  Great effort and a fish we are so very proud of.  This striped marlin tops off an amazing 2 weeks for Hookin Bull that has seen 4 WRC's and the 5th WRC for us this season.  Run down below on earlier fish for the year:

Eryn Jacobsen, landed 3 potential IGFA world records in late Feb. The first fish was a Mako Shark on 4kg line that went 87.2kg and quickly followed up by another Mako on the same line weight that tipped the scales at 108.6kg.  The penultimate day of the National's , had Eryn battling a Big Eye Tuna for close to 2 hours on 8kg line.  Her third pending world record fish was presented to the weighmaster at the Hohoura Big Game Club being a very respectable 49.6kg tuna which looks set to beat the existing 1985 record previously held in San Diego by over 11kgs.   Eryn took out the coveted Carol Attwood Memorial trophy as well as the champion angler tuna section. We also helped Hohoura to place 3rd overall in the Varta Cup.  The Moet, also fishing for Hohoura,  had a great week with the billfish tagging 13 to take out the tagging section - good going guys.  I've still got some prime fishing dates available for anyone who is keen to fish with us - give me a bell for more info on 0274 776604.
cheers JB

14 January 2010

A great start to the season on our first full day out with Guy Jacobsen landing a Mako Shark on 1kg line that weighed 60.4kg.  This is is new pending WORLD RECORD. Well done Guy.  Marlin are starting to show up but nothing red hot yet. Weather has been brilliant - long may it continue.  Tight lines. JB

21 December 2009

We've been busy getting HOOKIN' BULL ready for the marlin season that is about to kick off.  Water is starting to warm up and the first billfish of the season won't be too far away.   HOOKIN' BULL is available for charter from early January so give me a call if you are keen to fish with us.  Lets hope it is another terrific season like last year's.  Here's to a safe and happy Xmas and may 2010 be full of fish and great weather.kind regards JB

28 August 2009- HOOKIN’ BULL - 2009 season that was...

We started fishing in early January with things a little slow through the early part however it did pick up towards the end. In early February things really heated up with some outstanding fishing off Cape Brett and down to the Poor Knights. We moved up to the Three Kings and the fishing, unbelievably, just got better. To top it off the weather was the best in years and we were seeing big striped marlin in the 130kg – 170kg range. Perfect! Here’s the run down on how things went.

January saw us fishing in good weather but patchy water. We experienced some reasonable fishing and although we had our chances on light tackle including a couple of blue marlin and had the leader on a handful of fish, we didn’t finish the job off for any record claims. Katie B tagged a 75kg striped marlin on 15kg. Her first marlin: a very proud father and pretty excited daughter.

During February we started raising good numbers and getting between 6 and 12 shots per day catching the odd marlin but no record fish. A couple of days of fishing heavy tackle we caught 4 striped marlin. During the NZBGFC Nationals contest we had, once again, a bunch of bites. We caught a couple of stripeys on 6kg as well as a Mako around 220-250kg which was pretty impressive. We pitched the heavy tackle to any small marlin and tagged 3. Our best day saw us raising 20 fish. We experienced some pretty wild fights but things just didn’t quite go our way for a variety of reasons and didn’t manage to boat any big enough. The joys of fishing on 2 – 8kg line with most fish being on 2kg.

March carried on the same with a heap of fish and good sizes too. Things started to go our way except for one memorable day we raised 30 fish with some crazy wild action but somehow still went home empty handed. On the 17th March, after years of trying, Guy caught a dream fish on 6kg line – a striped marlin that tipped the Houhoura Club scales at 168.4kg. This fish put on an awesome display of jumping for close to 2 hours before Brad was able to grab the leader with Rowan planting a couple of beauty gaff shots; a total team effort. Guy’s fish has just been ratified by the IGFA as a world record. The same day we also had another big stripey on 3kg line for an hour or so but unfortunately just couldn’t finish it off but nonetheless one hell of a day. With the weather being so settled we tried for a swordfish a few nights later. We had 3 bites but kept pulling the hooks until 3.30am we finally hooked up solid. Guy was the angler with the fish bolting and us chasing it around on the surface for 10 minutes until we saw it was definitely what we were after. It wasn’t until we pulled the sword into the boat that we realized how big it was especially when all 134.6kg of her decided to cut loose in the Hookin Bull cockpit. We were all in total awe of its power. This capture has also just been ratified as a new world record by the IGFA for a Broadbill Swordfish on 8kg line. That fish certainly made up for some of the bad days we’d had when things just refused to go our way.

Eryn then came onboard for a week and with the weather unsuitable for light tackle we switched to heavy tackle for some good fishing until things calmed down. After a few fishless nights trying for swords, we went back to light tackle and hooked up a striped marlin up on 2kg. This marlin went completely mad with Eryn doing a great job surviving all the jumps. After 20 minutes we had her fish in the boat – a pending world record claim on 2kg. A big night of celebrating was had. In late March, after an unusually slow day, we decided to live bait around Bird Rock in hope of a Black Marlin. Just as we were pulling our gear in after a non eventful day we noticed splashing and saw a small Bronze Whaler. A quick look at the record book saw Guy throwing a 3kg rig to it and after a much tougher fight than we had anticipated, we put our 4th world record claim in the boat for the month. The Bronze Whaler went 53kg on 3kg and IGFA have just ratified this claim. It certainly pays to be prepared.

The month of April continued on with the same good fishing and weather with a NZ record claim Mako on 3kg of 76kg for Guy followed by a couple more heavy tackle days that gave us good results at North Cape with some stripeys and a small Blue Marlin. We continued with the light tackle targeting striped marlin on 4kg however we didn’t manage any more records. It was good to see a heap of meatballs this year and we saw some amazing sights with tuna, sharks and marlin all feeding at the same time. The fishing stayed good all through April then both the weather and the fishing dropped off dramatically.

Late May saw the Hookin’ Bull crew winging our way via Brazil to the Cape Verde Islands for some Atlantic Blue Marlin fishing. This is an outstanding fishery. We spent the first 3 weeks on a 33’ Bertram – the Nhe Cretchu. Although she was in dire need of some TLC we had our chances mostly on 1kg and 3kg line which is not easy when targeting Blue Marlin. We then moved to the Amelia – a 36’ Bertram run by one of my old deckhands and good mate Marty Bates. We caught a IGFA world record claim 175lb Blue Marlin on 6lb line for Eryn followed closely by a 186lb Blue again on 6lb that put on an awesome display for a second pending world record for Eryn. Eryn also landed another Blue on 8kg of 200lb which wasn’t big enough for a claim but a great effort. Unfortunately we lost two 500lbers plus at the boat. A huge thanks to Zak Conde for all his help during our stay in the Cape Verde Islands. Anyone looking to fish up in that part of the world should give him a shout. Whilst it is remote and a little difficult to get to, the fishing is well worth the effort. I’m now back in chilly Northland getting ready for next season and looking forward to the family holiday in Fiji and some tropical warmth next week. Hookin’ Bull has just come off the slip after her winter maintenance and is looking good thanks to the efforts of Robert Aukett and his team at Opua Marine Painters. Brad and Rowan are both across to Cairns shortly for the Aussie Black Marlin season. Many thanks guys for your dedication and hard work the past season and very hearty congratulations to Guy and Eryn on their recent angling achievements.

If you are keen to fish with us this season please give me a call or drop an email. Although we do a fair bit of light tackle fishing we are naturally keen to fish on any tackle that charter guests prefer and carry all types of line class onboard right through to 60kg. If next season is anything like the last one it’s going to be a cracker.
Tight lines

10 July 2009

Just back from Cape Verde Islands where we spent the last 6 weeks in Sao Vincent solely targeting Atlantic Blue Marlin light tackle records .  We got 2 pending world record claims for Atlantic Blue Marlin that Eryn Jacobsen caught both on 6lb test. The first fish was caught on 20 June on Amelia.  This blue went 175lb on 6lb test and the fight lasted 45 mins. Eryn's 2nd fish was landed on 28 June, again on the Amelia.  This fish went 186lb on 6lb test after a 25 minute fight.   Eryn did an awesome angling job on both fish.  We also had a couple of other marathon fights on 16lb test that we couldn't quite finish off and boated a blue for Eryn that went 200lbs on 16lb - not big enough but again a great effort on light line. Unfortunately, Eryn's husband, Guy, wasn't as lucky with the fishing however he had a few moments on 1kg. Next year maybe? Big thanks to Zak Conde, Marty Bates and Chi for all the help during our stint up in Cape Verde.  Hookin Bull is on the hard down at Ashby's at the moment having some winter maintenance and I hope to have her back in the water in the next couple of weeks.  We are taking bookings now for the forthcoming marlin season - lets hope it is as good as last years which was probably one of the best seasons in recent years.  Call me or email me for availability.  Tight lines. JB

02 February 2009

The marlin are here!  Great weather and good numbers of striped marlin with a few blue marlin thrown in for good measure have turned up right up and down the Northland Coast.  We have just started our season and have managed some excitement on the light gear with Guy busting off a nice blue on 6kg and another one on 2kg.  We also had a couple of stripeys on 2 and 6kg but the highlight of last week was watching my daughter Katie B tag and release her first striped marlin.  Katie was on 15kg stand up and did a great job with her fish we estimated at around 65-70kg.  She's hooked for life now!  Remember I still have charter space available on Hookin Bull this season so please drop me a line to find out more about fishing with us.  Tight lines...........JB

December 10 2008

Well, the year has been pretty full on for us all.  Here's a quick run down on what we have been up to.

Mid February saw Hookin' Bull arrive in Opua after her lengthy journey from the G & S yard in Freeport Florida, via the scenic route of the Gold Coast followed by a short stint in Cairns chasing Black Marlin.  The fishing on the Reef last season was, unfortunately, one of the worst on record with rough seas and numbers generally down on previous years.  We had a bit of fun with black marlin on light tackle for owner Guy Jacobsen but never really came close with the seas often not playing their part.  Megan and the kids came across for a week in November and we had a really enjoyable week fishing and snorkeling on the Reef. Katie and Brad got to see everything from turtles, whales, and sharks through to big black marlin and swam along side just about everything that swims in the ocean.  The Reef has so much to offer. A huge thanks to Guy and Eryn for the opportunity to share it with the family. Megan got a lively black around 550lbs.  Whilst the fishing was poor in Cairns last season, it still remains very much a firm favourite for big fish and we'll more than likely be back at some stage in the not too distant future.

We started our NZ marlin season fishing the Nationals Contest in late February.  Brian Gibson from Taupo's Lochinvar Station and Opua icon Robbie Aukett joined Guy for the week.  We were fishing solely light tackle for Guy with Brian and Robbie on the heavier gear.  Fishing was pretty hot up at the Kings and we ended up with Guy boating a stripey on 6kg of 104.6kg that earned him champion angler for the striped marlin section which was the single highest point scoring fish in NZ during the contest. Well done Guy.  Robbie and Brian got a stripey each.  We were the top scoring team for the BOI Swordfish Club with 1743.33 points.

March saw us experiencing some great settled weather and striped marlin action to match with the team having a fantastic couple of days in the early part of the month cumulating in a bunch of outstanding captures.  Firstly Eryn, chasing her world record on 4kg, boated a striped marlin that weighed 85.2kg just missing out on a world record claim by .5kg!  Eryn went on that same day to boat another bigger stripey of 94kg that we were able to submit to the IGFA for a World Record claim. Two days later we had another incredible day with light tackle that saw Guy land a stripey on 1kg line tipping the scales at 105kg.  This is only the 3rd time in angling history that a gamefish has been captured with a breaking strain ratio of more than 100:1. The IGFA ratified Guy's 1kg fish recently and we're all thrilled to bits with this amazing world record. The next day Guy boated a blue marlin after a tough 2 hour scrap on 8kg line that is now a NZ National record.  This blue weighed a very respectable 170kg and again a fantastic feat on that light gear.
A blue shark of 57kg on 1kg line was added to Guy's list of record claims and this shark has recently been ratified by IGFA as a new World Record.  Guy also achieved a NZ National record for a swordfish on 8kg line that went 62.8kg.  We also lost another good sized swordfish for Guy on 8kg when the leader broke close to the boat. There were also plenty of other fish that were excellent captures.

After all this excitement, the IGFA delivered some bad news in early October.  The line on Eryn's second striped marlin over tested by a miserable 200 grams.  We will be back out there this season chasing that record for Eryn.  The good news was Eryn's first fish of 85.4kg is now a NZ National record on 4kg line.  Successful light tackle fishing takes a heap of preparation, patience and solid team work combined with a dose of luck.  I know it's not for everyone but it's certainly something that we as a team on Hookin' Bull love doing and these new records are something we're very proud of.  It was also pleasing to see the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club recognize these achievements at their annual prize giving in Russell in September.  Guy's trophies included the Club Champion and the prestigious Carrie Fin Trophy for the most meritorious catch.

After the NZ season wound down in late June, Guy, Eryn and I flew to the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic for 3 weeks light tackle fishing with skipper Zak Conde and my old crewman Marty Bates.  The blue marlin fishery off the Cape Verde Islands is outstanding and whilst we didn't put any fish on the scales we had some good action and really enjoyed our visit.  We have booked to return for 6 weeks fishing from late May through to early July 09. Watch this space.

In August we had a family trip up to LA taking in Disneyland. Somehow Megan managed to get me on a Royal Caribbean cruise down to San Diego, Catalina Island & Mexico.  One of the highlights was a visit to the Avalon Tuna Club on Catalina Island being the oldest game fishing club in the world. Some of the fishing photos & exhibits are really outstanding.  We've just returned from an awesome couple of days of successful hunting at Kaweka Ranch in the Hawkes Bay region.  I can highly recommend the property to any keen hunters and know that the team of Rob, Ian and Lee will look after you well.  Check out www.kawekaranch.com for more info.

Unfortunately, the survey process for Hookin' Bull dragged on a lot longer than any of us expected however we are pleased to report she is officially now in survey and we are taking bookings for the forthcoming season.  Hookin Bull is a lovely comfortable boat as well as being an extremely practical fishing vessel. Whilst a lot of our fishing with Guy and Eryn is on light line, we still carry a full compliment of tackle and we're more than happy to use whatever our charter guests prefer.  I'd like to acknowledge and thank my crew of Brad Fergus and Rowan White for all the hard work and dedication this past season.  Great work guys.  If you are keen to fish with us, please give me a bell to check on availability for the forthcoming season.  Have a great Xmas and a safe and very happy New Year. Tight lines.........JB

01 August 2008

Our NZ season finished up well with our last trip in early June seeing Guy weighing a broadbill swordfish that he got on 8kg line weighing 62.8kg.  This is a pending National record and a mighty effort.  Guy also weighed  a stripey of 105.4kg on 6kg line the same trip taking his talley on 6kg line to 6 striped marlin either tagged or weighed.  Guy also weighed a blue shark on 1kg line of 57kg that is now a pending world record.  Light tackle fishing is hard work and it's a great feeling when it all goes according to plan and you have something on the scales for all the hard effort that goes into the sport.  Well done Guy and Eryn for the great fishing achievements this past season.

The good news is that Hookin Bull is now officially in survey and we are now taking bookings for the forthcoming season.  She's a lovely, comfortable boat but first and foremost a real fishing machine.  We look forward to having you join us and showing you what she's capable of.  Whilst we do specialise in light tackle for marlin, we have a full range of tackle on board from 60kg to 1kg and target all species.  Give me a shout if you have any questions about a trip on Hookin' Bull. I am only too happy to help with plans for your fishing charter and answer any questions that you might have about a trip.  If you are anything like me, you will be looking forward to some half decent weather and being actually able to get out on the water.  The weather has been crap of late - roll on summer.  Till then, tight lines.

March 03 2008

Hi everyone

"Hookin' Bull" is finally here in the Bay of Islands after our short season in Australia on the Reef.  Fishing in Aussie was certainly slower than usual and the weather didn't help with our light tackle plans.  We had a bit of fun with some blacks on 8kg and 2kg and came close a couple of times but not close enough.  The Great Barrier Reef still remains a firm favourite for big fish and we hope to get back there soon and try our luck again with the light gear.

The fishing here in the Bay of Islands and Northland Coast started off well this year with a number of good size blues being landed or tagged.  We fished the Nationals last week and spent most of our time up on the King Bank where some good striped marlin action was to be had.  Owner Guy Jacobsen boated a stripey on 6kg of 104.6kg that earnt him champion angler for the striped marlin section which was the single highest point scoring fish in NZ during the contest. Well done Guy.  Guy also tagged another stripey on 6kg and we tagged a couple more on the heavier gear for anglers Robbie Aukett and Brian Gibson. The weather unfortunately packed up towards the end of the Nationals and has been a bit patchy of late. Last night in Hohoura we weighed 2 striped marlin that Eryn Jacobsen caught on 4kg line.  The first fish went 85.2 kg - just .5kg shy of the current world record.  The 2nd stripey did the job however tipping the scales at 94kg - a pending new world record. A fantastic effort by Eryn after fighting this fish for 3 hours.

On Monday 10 March Guy landed a striped marlin on 1kg line caught at the Middlesex Bank after a tense 10-15 minute scrap.  This is a pending new world record and we believe only the 3rd time ever a 100 to 1 plus billfish has been taken.  Well done Guy on this amazing capture!  Same day Guy also landed a 170kg blue marlin taken on 8kg line that took over 2 hours to catch with this fish being a pending National Record.  The fishing up north has been great with plenty of shots and the right weather conditions to allow us to fish on the ultra light tackle.

We are spending a fair bit of time with the light tackle this season and we're certainly very impressed with the capabilities of "Hookin' Bull" to date.  I've still got dates available in April and the early part of May for anyone keen to charter so please email or call me if you are interested in fishing on the new boat.
